NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team will host Nichols College in the quarterfinal round  of the NCAA Division III Tournament this Saturday, March 17, at 7 p.m.

TICKETS: Tickets will be available on game day at the door, which will open at 6 p.m. Prices are $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for students with proper I.D. and seniors, and $3.00 for children under 12. (Children 2 and under are free).

SALVE REGINA VS. NICHOLS

  • This is the 40th meeting between Salve Regina and Nichols. The Bison own a 21-14-4 record all-time. This is the fourth meeting between the teams this season.
  • The Seahawks and Bison last met in the semifinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament.
  • The Bison withstood a furious third period comeback from the Seahawks to walk away with a 5-4 road victory.

LAST TIME OUT FOR SALVE REGINA - NICHOLS 5, SALVE REGINA 4  - FEBRUARY 24, 2018

  • Oliver Arnberg netted his second goal of the game 1:49 into the third period and the Bison led 4-1.
  • Paul Boutoussov scored at 5:16 of the third, sparking a scoring run for the Seahawks that saw them score three times in six minutes to tie the game.
  • Tim Sweeney (Hanover, Mass.) poked home a lose puck at 8:33 then John McClean (North Andover, Mass.) corralled a lose puck in the slot and back-handed it in to knot up the score 4-4.
  • The Seahawks continued to push, searching for their first lead of the game, but the Bison responded at 14:19 when Hogan Davidson (Duluth, Minn.) received a perfect pass from Filip Virgili (Malmo, Sweden), setting him up right in front of the goal. He buried the shot past Wojtala to steal back the lead for the Bison and take the wind out of the Seahawks sails.
  • The Seahawks would pull the goalie with 1:22 left but could not get a shot on net and the Bison hung on for the upset win.
  • The Bison would go on to defeat the University of New England to claim the CCC Title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

LAST TIME OUT FOR NICHOLS -  NICHOLS 3, FITCHBURG ST. 1 - MARCH 10, 2018

  • The Bison's hot play continued on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Fitchburg State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Seniors Scott Cuthrell and Chris Deming, along with sophomore Vincent Crivello, each scored for the Bison while senior Colin Brennan stopped 17 shots for his 12th win of the season.
  • The win marked the first in four tries for Nichols in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Salve Regina, which earned the university's first ever at-large selection for any sport, was given a bye into the NCAA Quarterfinals.
  • Salve Regina's early season success helped it gain an at-large bid despite losing to Nichols in the conference semifinals.
  • Wins over perennial NCAA contenders such as Norwich, Adrian, and UMass Boston in non-conference play, coupled with regular-season success throughout the difficult conference schedule, helped the Seahawks work their way into the national conversation.
  • The Seahawks went 7-1 this season when facing opponents who were ranked at the time of the contest.
  • Head coach Zech Klann is in his first season at the helm of the Seahawks program. He was named CCC Coach of the Year, guiding his squad to a new program record 20-5-2 record.

  • Jack Billings (19g-26a-45) set new program records for points and assists in a single season.
    • Ranks seventh in the nation in points per game scoring.
  • Senior captain Pat Thompson has the most games played in program history (103). He has played 20 more games than the next closest player on the Seahawks roster.
  • Danny Eruzione ranks fifth in the nation in points per game scoring for freshman (10g-22a-32).
    • Eruzione is nephew to Mike Eruzione, captain of the 1980 United States Olympic team that won the Gold Medal, and notably the Miracle on Ice over the Russians.

WHAT'S UP NEXT

  • The four victors of the quarterfinals head to Lake Placid, N.Y. for the semifinals and championship game. The national semifinals will be played at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, March 23 from Herb Brooks Arena at the Olympic Center. The championship will be played on Saturday, March 24 at 7 p.m. ET.
