NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team hosts Western New England in the quarterfinal round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament.

LAST TIME OUT
Salve Regina finished the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey regular season with a 14-2-2 (19-4-2 overall) record and 30 points in the conference standings to claim the Regular-Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CCC Championship Tournament. The Seahawks closed out the season with back-to-back shutouts of Nichols College. The Seahawks got 32 stops from netminder Blake Wojtala in the 4-0 road win on Friday (Feb. 9). He followed that up with 26 saves in a 2-0 home victory on Sunday (Feb. 11). The shutouts were the seventh and eighth of Wojtala's career, adding to his program record.

SEAHAWKS NOTES FROM THE NEST

  • The Seahawks, which are one of three CCC teams currently ranked in the national polls, sit at No. 5 in both the D3hockey.com Men's Top 15 and the USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll. They currently lead the league in goals against average (1.95) and third in goals per game (4.08).
  • The Seahawks were ranked second in the East Region by the NCAA.
  • The Seahawks went 7-1 against ranked teams this season.
  • Jack Billings, Nick Cyr, Danny Eruzione, Vincenzo Renda, and Blake Wojtala represented the Seahawks on the CCC All-Conference squad.
  • Wojtala was named the Goaltender of the Year while first-year head coach Zech Klann was named Coach of the Year. 
  • Wojtala was one of the best goaltenders in the nation during the regular season and currently boasts the fourth best save percentage in Division III at .938. In addition to leading the league in that category, he also has a league-best 17 wins and the league's lowest goals-against average at 1.94. He was named CCC Goaltender of the Week four times (Weeks ending Nov. 12, Jan. 7, Jan. 28, and Feb. 11).
  • The Seahawks claimed the 2016 ECAC Northeast Championship (the first in program history).

GOLDEN BEAR BLOG

  • The Golden Bears are one of two teams to hand the Seahawks a CCC loss with Curry being the only other school to defeat Salve Regina in conference play in 2017-18.
  • The Golden Bears scored five unanswered goals to defeat Becker to claim the final spot in the CCC tournament.
  • Junior Steve Beck led the Golden Bears with a four-point effort (two goals, two assists). 
  • Matt O'Dea leads the Golden Bears in scoring (18 goals, 15 assists) this season.
  • Junior netminder Kevin Gollmer led the Golden Bears to a 7-11-3 record between the pipes and made 634 saves for a .907 save percentage.

Salve Regina leads the all-time series 19-10-1 and has gone 10-1-0 against the Golden Bears in the last eleven meetings.
