Gulls surge past Seahawks

SEAHAWK MEN'S ICE HOCKEY RESULTS

Endicott 9, Salve Regina 1
Portsmouth, R.I. - Portsmouth Abbey
Saturday, January 28, 2017

Summary
After falling behind 1-0 in the first period visiting Endicott College scored nine unanswered goals the rest of the game to defeat the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team 9-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday night.

Series and Streaks
This was the fifth meeting between the teams. The loss snaps a three game winning streak by the Seahawks in the series. Prior to tonight the Seahawks had won three straight over the Gulls by a 12-2 scoring advantage. Tonight the Gulls evened the scoring in the series, 18 goals apiece over five games, and now only trail 3-2 in the all-time series.

Three Stars of the Game
1 – EC sophomore Tommy Besinger (Milton, Mass.) - dished out five assists in the game.
2 – EC freshman Jason Kalinowski (Stamford, Conn.) - had three goals and two assists.
3 – EC sophomore Joosh Bowes (Edmonton, Alberta) - scored twice and had an assist.

Key Stat of the Game
The Gulls took control of the game in the first and second period, outshooting the Seahawks 37-13 in that stretch, scoring seven goals, two shorthanded to close out an emphatic second period.

Turning Point
The Gulls were controlling the opening period but had not found the back of the net because of the job Blake Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.) was doing in net for the Seahawks. Despite facing heavy pressure off of Seahawk turnovers, Wojtala kept the Gulls of the board and the game remained scoreless. Late in the period Mason Brinich (Jupiter, Fla.) scored his first career goal to give the Seahawks a 1-0 edge which seemed to turn the tide for the Seahawks. The lead was fleeting however as less than two minutes later Jack Musil (Hull, England) directed a puck past Wojtala then Ross Olsson (Billerica, Mass.) scored a powerplay goal with one second left on the clock in the first. The Gulls continued to assert themselves in the game, tagging the Seahawks for five more goals in the second.

Quick Hits

  • Josh Bowes and Jason Kalinowski (Stamford, Conn.) both scored twice, while Jack Musil, Ross Olsson, Logan Day (Seminole, Fla.), Ryan Dougherty (Sterling Heights, Mich.), and Cam Bleck (Lake Forest, Ill.) all found the back of the net for the Gulls.
  • Wojtala made 27 saves in the loss, dropping his record to 10-6-2 before being relieved by senior Alexander Devine (Hampton, N.H.) who stopped eight shots in 25 minutes of action.
  • Endicott netmidner Kevin Aldrige (Birmingham, Mich.) made 25 saves to improve to 12-3-2 on the season.
  • Endicott was 3-for-5 with the man advantage while the Seahawks were 0-for-5 on the powerplay.
