Colonels hand Seahawks second CCC loss
MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's hockey team defeated No.13 nationally-ranked Salve Regina, 4-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday night at the Max Ulin Rink in Milton, Mass. With the win the Colonels improve to 9-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the CCC.  The loss drops the Seahawks to 10-5-2 on the season and 7-2-1 in the CCC.

Salves sophomore Kevin Clare (Chicago, Ill.) got the Seahawks on the board 14:12 into the contest to take a 1-0 lead.  Clare, who was setup by junior Joseph Yeadon (Burlington, Mass.), took a slap shot that sailed just over the shoulder of the Colonels senior netminder Brett Sinclair (St. Catherines, Ontario).  Curry quickly answered back two minutes later after senior Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich.) found classmate James Murphy (Malden, Mass.) open in front of the net.  Nelson sent Murphy the puck who then one-timed it past the glove of Salves sophomore goaltender Blake Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.).  The Seahawks held the advantage in shots at 14-10.

The Colonels came out strong in the second frame outshooting Nichols, 16-9 and netting the lone goal to take a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes of play.  Clare came up with some strong saves but finally got beat at the 16:12 mark.  Junior Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ontario) tallied the go-ahead goal off assists by junior Jarret Kup (Rosseau, Ontario) and freshman Alec Mono (Las Vegas, Nev.).  Sinclair was solid between the pipes stopping all nine shots he faced.

Curry earned the eventual game-winning goal at 9:07 of the final period.  Salve was in a power play situation but struggled to even the score.  The Colonels gained possession of the puck and had it in their offensive zone.  They lost control of it and the Seahawks tried to make a pass from behind the net but junior Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.) intercepted it right outside the crease and one-timed over the pads of Wojtala.

Salve was given another man-up opportunity just over a minute later and this time capitalized to come back within one with under 10 minutes remaining.  Sophomore Nick Cyr (Mount Laurel, N.J.) ripped a wrist shot past Sinclair off assists from senior Evan Schultz (Durham, N.H.) and sophomore Shaun Patry (Penfield, N.Y.).  The teams battled back-and-forth with the Seahawks looking to even the score at three apiece and pulled Wojtala with 44 seconds showing on the clock.  Salve had the puck in Curry's defensive zone but junior Robert Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) got control of it and fired it down into an open net to seal the conference victory at 4-2.

Curry went 0-3 on power plays while Salve was 1-4. The Colonels had 36 shots while the Seahawks had 33.

Sinclair made an impressive 31 saves in net for Curry for the win. Wojtala had 32 stops in net for Salve in the loss.

The Colonels return to the ice on Thursday, January 26 in a 6:45 p.m. game against Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Wentworth.  Salve is back in action also on Thursday when they travel to CCC opponent Suffolk for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
