Seahawks soar past Eagles
PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team defeats Daniel Webster College 9-2 on Saturday night.
The Seahawks jumped on top early with three goals in the game's first four minutes. Evan Schultz (Durham, N.H.) scored at 1:28 to open the scoring for Salve Regina. Then Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) went end to end scoring an unassisted goal at 3:11 of the first. 35 seconds later Joseph Yeadon (Burlington, Mass.) scored what would wind up being the game winning goal on a feed from Adam Augusta (Windham, N.H.).
The goal also chased the Eagle's starting netminder Anthony D'Urso (Rome, N.Y.) in favor of Morgan Hudson (Ottawa, Ont.).
The Seahawks controlled the tempo of the game with stifling defense in the neutral zone, a strong forecheck, and sustained offense in the zone. There were numerous times the Seahawks had minute to minute and a half long possessions offensively in the attacking zone. When the Seahawks were not scoring in transition they did so with hard work in the zone.
The Eagles would tack on a goal at the end of the first period from Steven Smoltz (Livonia, Mich.) after the Seahawks turned it over in their own zone.
The Seahawks would score four more times in the second period to make it an 8-1 game heading into the third period.
Daniel Webster struck first in the third when Nick McNally (Grafton, Mass.) fired a shot past Jake Williams (Montreal, Quebec) at 12:20. The Seahawks answered quickly thereafter on the power play.
Jeremy Hannah (Dieppe, N.B.) was called for roughing at 14:54 of the third but was not in the box long as the Seahawks scored off the faceoff to create the final 9-2 margin.
The Seahawks outshot the Eagles 38-13 overall in the game.
Next the Seahawks will travel to play Hobart on January 16 and then Elmira as part of a back-to-back on January 17.
The Eagles return to the ice on January 13 when they face MIT.
