Seahawks held scoreless; fall 8-0
WATERVILLE, Maine --- The 11th-ranked Bowdoin College men's hockey team exploded for five goals in the first period on the way to an 8-0 win against Salve Regina on the second day of the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off Classic on Sunday at Colby College.
Bowdoin moved to 5-0-1 overall, while the Seahawks dropped to 3-4-2 overall.
Salve Regina had a terrific opportunity to go up 1-0 with 15:47 left in the first period when Evan Schultz had a breakaway, but Bowdoin goalie Max Fenkell stood his ground and did not go for a Schultz fake.
The Polar Bears scored two goals in a span of 27 seconds to take control. Jay Kourkoulis set up both goals on shots from outside. The first goal was just 28 seconds after the breakaway by Schultz. Kourkoulis ripped a shot which was deflected in by Matthew Lison.
Just 28 seconds later, Kourkoulis had a shot from inside the blue line and the puck was deflected in the air. Brendan Conroy was coming in on the left post and knocked the puck into the goal for a 2-0 margin.
Lison scored again on the first of Bowdoin's four power play goals with 10:44 remaining. Ryan Collier got the puck to Lison, who had a clean breakaway on Salve Regina goaltender Jake Williams. The shot by Lison hit off Williams and went into the upper right corner of the cage.
Matt Rubinoff scored his first goal of the season on the first assist of the year from Tim Coffey at 17:53 of the opening period. The play started off a face-off between the Salve Regina blue line and the center line. Rubinoff found himself open on the left side of the goal for the score.
Cullen Geary also scored his first of the season with just 59 seconds left on a blast from above the left circle. Johnny Malusa got his first assist and Connor Quinn had the other assist on the score.
Coffey scored his first of the season at 6:54 of the second period for Bowdoin's second power play goal. Danny Palumbo notched his second assist. The Polar Bears went up 7-0 when Daniel McMullan tallied on the power play at 10:24 of the second period from Quinn and Lison.
Matt Sullivan scored the final goal on the power play at 12:47 of the third period from McMullan and Conroy.
Fenkell finished with 27 saves for the shutout, while Williams stopped 37 shots.
