BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team falls 5-3 to Colby College in Saturday's opener of the Bowdoin/Colby Face-off Classic.

The Mules collect their first win of 2014 and improve to 1-3-1, while the Seahawks drop to 3-3-2.

Salve Regina opened the game with a quick goal just under a minute into play as Jonathan Felteau (Peabody, Mass.) cleaned up a loose puck on the left post to go ahead 1-0. The Mules answered back just 45 seconds later off a turnover in the Seahawks defensive zone allowed Ray Zeek a clear look from low in the slot. Colby took its first lead of the game 8:33 into the period off a power play goal from Mario Benicky. Benicky wristed a shot over a sliding Salve Regina defender, going bar down, to put the Mules on top. Jack Burton extended Colby's lead in the 14thminute off a helper from Cam MacDonald. Collecting his own rebound, MacDonald passed right to Burton who had an open look with Jack Williams out of position.

The Seahawks pulled within one in the opening two minutes of the second frame as Evan Shultz (Durham, N.H.) stuffed in an uncovered puck. The two teams traded chances over the following fifteen minutes, with the Seahawks mounting sustained offensive pressure with four minute remaining but never finding the back of the net. A scramble in front of Salve Regina's net left Williams sprawled across the crease with no stick, but his defense was able to collect the puck and clear the zone.

Salve Regina and Colby traded quick goals again in the final period scoring within one minute of each other at 5:09 and 6:04 respectively. Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) went top right shelf after receiving the feed from Evan Shultz behind the net to even the score at 3-3. Colby came right back down the ice to regain the lead off a chip shot by Devin Albert. Albert pushed the score to 5-3 in favor of the Mules after he buried a slap shot from the left faceoff circle.

Williams made 23 stops for the Seahawks, with Jordan Nathan saving 32 shots for Colby. Salve Regina outshot the Mules 35-28.

Both teams play again tomorrow afternoon at Colby College. The Mules host Wentworth Institute of Technology (4:00 p.m.) while Salve Regina faces Bowdoin (1:00 p.m.).
