Seahawks fall to Bison

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Sophomores Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Sean Fleming (Easthampton, N.J.) each recorded a goal and two assists in Nichols College's 8-4 win over Salve Regina University in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action Saturday night at Levy Rink.

Sophomore Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) added his ninth and 10th goals of the season while juniors Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) and Mike Schwartz (Long Beach, N.Y.) each notched a goal and an assist as the Bison won their second-straight to move to 11-4-2 (4-1-1 ECAC Northeast) on the season. Senior captain Josh DeLoach (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Paul Prescott (Oakdale, Minn.) each picked up two apples in a win which saw a total of 12 different Nichols student-athletes record at least one point.

Senior William Gomolinski (Western Springs, Ill.) and sophomore Parker Bowen (Pembroke, Mass.) each recorded a goal and an assist for the Seahawks (6-11-0, 4-2-0 ECAC Northeast), who dropped their 10th-straight contest.

Jackson opened the scoring 8:27 into the first when his wrister from the right circle snuck inside the left post. Schwartz and junior Chris Gularte (Marina, Calif.) picked up assists on Jackson's fifth marker of the season. Golominski evened the scored 50 seconds later with a shot from a bad angle that snuck past sophomore goalie Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.). Bowen was credited with the lone assist. The Bison answered with goals from Beasley and Swansen 39 seconds apart to grab a 3-1 lead. DeLoach let go of a shot that went off Prescott and landed on the stick of Beasley at the left side of the net, and the Bison's leading-scorer potted his ninth of the season. Swansen then netted his third of the campaign from junior Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.) and junior Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio).

Nichols closed the first period with a 19-9 edge in shots. The Seahawks cut their deficit to 3-2 on Bowen's fourth of the season off a feed from Gomolinski at 5:26 of the second period. Fleming responded with his seventh goal of the season less than two minutes later to push the Nichols lead back to a pair at 4-2. Beasley stole the puck and fed Fleming in the slot, and he slid a backhander through the legs of junior goalie Frank McCormick (Peabody, Mass.). Butler was credited with his ninth goal of the season exactly two minutes later to make it 5-2 in favor of the home team.

Gularte took a shot from the right point that Butler redirected through the legs of Devine. Prescott picked up his second assist of the game on the play. Nichols added its sixth goal with 10 seconds left in the period on the power-play when Butler swept the puck into the net after Beasley hit him with a slap pass from the top of the left circle. The shots through two periods were 32-24 in favor of the Bison.

Salve Regina got one back early in the third when junior John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) stole a pass in the offensive zone and picked the blocker side of Larson to make it 6-3. Freshman Mike Weaver (Wakefield, Mass.) tallied his sixth marker at 5:11 of the third when he chipped a rebound off a shot from Jackson between the pads of junior David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.). Fleming was credited with the second assist.

SRU made it 7-4 at 14:59 when junior Michael Naso (Londonderry, N.H.) converted a feed from Bowen into his eighth goal of the season. Schwartz added an empty-net goal from the neutral zone with 1:41 remaining.

Nichols outshot the Seahawks 45-36. Larson finished with 32 saves to move to 8-4-2 on the season. McCormick allowed five goals on 24 shots before being replaced by classmate David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.). He was credited with 13 saves.

Nichols went 2-for-4 with the man advantage and killed off four of the five PP chances received by Salve Regina.

The Bison head to Springfield on Thursday for a 7:10 p.m. contest with Western New England. The Seahawks play Johnson & Wales (RI) Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
