Neumann spoils Salve Regina rally, 6-5 in OT

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team defeated Salve Regina University 6-5 in overtime on Friday evening in non-conference action. The Seahawks erased two multi-goal deficits (4-0 and 5-2) before tying the score in the third.

Senior Alex Barr scored his first goal of the season and the first goal of the game for Salve Regina (6-4) at 7:16 in the second. Classmate David Watkins followed with his first goal of 2013-14 to trim the deficit to 4-2.

Shayne Morrissey netted two goals for the Knights, including the game-winner, and added an assist. Ryan Luiten and Chris Bournazos each had a goal and an assists while Sam House handed out three assists. The Knights went 4-for-6 in the man advantage. Ben Curley made 26 saves in net.

Neumann opened the scoring early as Bournazos scored on the man advantage just 2:38 into the game. Luiten and Morrissey notched the assists. Morrissey then scored his first goal of the game, also on the power play, at the 13:46 mark of the first. House handed out his first assist. With 59 seconds left on the clock, Matt Zendejas found the back of the net. Jory Mullinand Collin O'Neil had the assists as the Knights help a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Brandon Gagne put Neumann up 4-0 1:59 into the second period. House and Jon Low drew the assists. The Seahawks tallied two of their own goals before Luiten scored another Knight power play goal.

Salve Regina scored two late goals in the final 1:25 of the second period to pull to a 5-4 score heading into the third period. Cameron Gaudet and John Scorcia both had goals in the final two minutes of the second period.

The third period was much quieter than the first two periods. Marc Biggs tallied the only goal and knotted the game at five with 1:26 left in regulation and sent the game into overtime. Biggs, Gaudet, and Scorcia also had assists against the Knights.

Neumann was called for a penalty in the extra session, which was followed by a Salve Regina penalty. As the Knights came out of the box and went on the power play, Morrissey found the back of the net for the game-winner. Bournazos drew the assist.

Neumann is now 4-3-2 overall. The Knights will host Morrisville State tomorrow evening in non-conference action beginning at 7 p.m. Salve Regina travels to Utica for the Pioneers' annual Teddy Bear Toss game.
