PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men's ice hockey team received goals from seven different players on their way to an 8-1 victory over Salve Regina University during an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast contest at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink on Wednesday night. The Wildcats improve to 12-6-2 (6-2-1 ECAC) with the win, while the Seahawks fall to 4-15-0 (1-8-0 ECAC).
Johnson & Wales opened the game by scoring three goals during the first 14 minutes of play. Junior Adam Bolotin (Vernon Hills, Ill.) got the scoring started with an even strength tally at the 4:03 mark, while sophomore Guillaume Cyr (Quebec City, Quebec) and junior Jason Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) followed with goals of their own to give the Wildcats an early 3-0 advantage.
The Seahawks cut the JWU lead to 3-1 before the end of the opening period as freshman Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) slapped home a rebound off a shot by junior Mike Cenisio (Milan, Italy) to put Salve Regina on the board.
However, the Wildcats responded by scoring five unanswered goals over the final two periods of action to seal the 8-1 victory.
Pietrasiak scored his second goal of the game with a power play marker at the 5:28 mark of the middle frame, while sophomore Colin Flynn (Elverson, Pa.) and senior Jeremiah Ketts (Foristell. Mo.) each scored even strength goals to send the Wildcats into the third period holding a 6-1 advantage.
Freshman Alex Porrier (Rutland, Vt.) added a power play goal in the third period, while sophomore Ian DePasquale (Buffalo, N.Y.) tacked on an even strength score with just 31 seconds remaining in the final period.
Junior Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio) stopped 32-of-33 shots to improve to 11-6-2 on the season, while junior Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ontario) earned the loss in net for the Seahawks, falling to 4-13-0 on the season.
Both teams return to conference action at home this Saturday, with the Wildcats facing Wentworth at 6:45 p.m. and the Seahawks welcoming Suffolk at 7 p.m.
