Salve Regina nets first-ever win over Colby, 3-2

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with just 1:14 remaining to lift the Salve Regina men's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over Colby in the second day of the 2011 Bowdoin/Colby Faceoff Classic Sunday at Bowdoin's Watson Arena. The victory marks the Seahawks' first-ever win versus Mules.

The win improves the Seahawks to 3-4-0. Colby drops to 1-3-0 this season.

A nice transition resulted in Colby's first goal as Ray Zeek received a feed from Chris Buonomo on a break and snapped a shot to the top-left corner with 5:24 left in the opening period.

Salve Regina evened the score just after killing off a penalty late in the frame, as William Gomolinski (Western Springs, Ill.) forced a turnover in the Colby zone and fed David Watkins (Natick, Mass.) alone in front for a top-shelf goal.

After failing to score on a power play early in the period, Salve Regina cashed in on its second chance of the second period when Gomolinski poked home his own rebound in front to give the Seahawks a 2-1 edge at 9:05.

Seahawk goaltender Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ontario) stood tall in the third period, making 12 saves, including a pair of nifty stops off a blast from Scott Harff and follow-up by Nate Morgan with ten minutes to go.

Colby was able to find the equalizer with 2:29 to go, as Harff ripped a shot from one stride inside the blue line top-shelf.

However, Goodwin responded just moments later for the Seahawks, stunning the Mules with a blue line blast of his own that beat Matt Delaney high on his glove side with just 1:14 to go.

McDonald finished with 29 stops in net for Salve Regina. Delaney made 20 saves for the Mules.
