Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Three Seahawks scored in double figures, but it was the work of junior forward Kevin Mannix (Barrington, R.I.) on the boards (11 rebounds) that keyed a four-point victory for Salve Regina University men's basketball, 71-67, over visiting Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Each team had double-digit leads slip away. Salve Regina led by 14 in the first half, 25-11, after three successive 3-pointers - two from junior Isaiah Bowman (Roxbury, Mass.) and one from senior Rodney Morton (Malden, Mass.). Freshman Cameron Collins (Oakdale, Conn.) scored the first two baskets of the second half before Western New England went on a 25-9 run to build its largest lead (11 points), 58-47, following a 3-pointer from EJ Day (Norwalk, Conn.) at the 11:09 mark.

Salve Regina leads the all-time series, 13-9, and has won the last five meetings while sweeping this year's home-and-away series.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina senior Rodney Morton (Malden, Mass.) led all players with 23 points, coming off the bench to make eight of 16 from the floor including three 3-pointers. He went four-for-four from the free-throw line.
  2. Salve Regina junior Kevin Mannix (Barrington, R.I.) pulled down 11 rebounds, three on the offensive glass, and eight on the defensive boards. He added four points on two of four from the floor.
  3. Western New England sophomore Mike McGuire (Garden City, N.Y.) led the Golden Bears with 16 points on six of 10 from the floor including four of five 3-pointers.

Led by Morton's game-high 23 points, Salve Regina's bench outscored the visitors, 39-21. The Seahawks also dominated the boards with 11 offensive caroms and 32 defensive rebounds (43-29 overall).

Turning Point
Trailing by 11 points midway through the second half (58-47 at 11:09), Salve Regina went on a 24-7 run that started with a Kevin Mannix layup. Morton had a 3-pointer and then Andrew Bronstein (Needham, Mass.) scored an old-fashioned three-point play that cut the deficit to three in less than a minute of play.
