Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University senior Nicholas Bates (Danvers, Mass.) grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds (second most in school history) and scored 16 points to lead a second-half rally in a 70-62 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball victory over University of New England at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Rodney Morton (Malden, Mass.) led all players with 20 points, continuing to average over 25 points a game on the Rodgers Recreation Center floor (151 points in six games). Gavin Dibble (Greenport, N.Y.) led the visitors with 17 points including three 3-pointers.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks own a 14-11 edge in the all-time series with the Nor'easters, and Salve Regina ends University of New England's five-game win streak in the series. Salve Regina ends its own five-game losing skid. The teams are tied in the CCC standings for seventh place (3-7) and both have wins over each other as well as Western New England University and Curry College.

  1. Seahawk senior forward Nicholas Bates (Danvers, Mass.), presented a commemorative game ball prior to today's game after reaching the 1,000-point milestone last weekend, grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds and scored 16 points in the victory.
  2. Seahawk junior guard Rodney Morton (Malden, Mass.) has scored at least 20 points in every home game this season and he led all players with exactly that amount today.
  3. Nor'easter junior guard Gavin Dibble (Greenport, N.Y.) helped his team to a five-point halftime lead (33-28) with 10 points before the break (two-for-two behind the arc) and finished with 17 points on the day.

Salve Regina shot 61.5 percent from the floor in the second half (16-for-26) to overcome the five-point halftime deficit.

Turning Point
Trailing by four (48-44) after a layup by Jean-Luc Parker (Georgetown, Texas) with 10:00 remaining in the second half, Salve Regina went on an 18-4 run over four and a half minutes with 3-pointers from Morton and Isaiah Bowman (Roxbury, Mass.) and a tip in for Bates. Morton also had a fast-break dunk during the surge.

  • Bates' 22 rebounds are the second most in a single game by any Salve Regina men's basketball player. Matt Grendal recorded 24 rebounds in a Seahawk win at Rhode Island College on Dec. 8, 2005.
  • Morton has drawn 21 personal fouls in six home games this season, including four infractions four times, but has not fouled out while playing on the Rodgers Recreation Center floor.
