NEWPORT, R.I. - Four Seahawks scored in double-figures as Salve Regina University men's basketball defeated Western New England University, 83-49, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center. The Seahawks win by their largest margin of the season.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina splits the season series with Western New England and now trails the all-time series, 9-8, with the Golden Bears.

Three Stars of the Game
1 – Salve Regina senior Barrett Hanlon (Hopkinton, Mass.) - posted his second-straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
2 – Salve Regina junior Nicholas Bates (Danvers, Mass.) - scored a game-high 18 points and added seven rebounds; he was four for four from the free-throw line.
3 – Salve Regina sophomore Bryce Boggs (Hyde Park, Mass.) - had 17 points and eight rebounds.

Key Stat of the Game
Salve Regina shot over 52 percent from the floor and held the visitors to under 26 percent.

Turning Point
The Seahawks led from the start and did not take the foot off the pedal. Bates hit a layup for the first score and was followed by layups from Hanlon and David Hanson (Stockton, England).

Quick Hits

  • After an 8-0 Salve Regina run to start the game, Luis Agrait (South Hadley, Mass) hit the first Golden Bear basket (a 3-pointer), to close within five. Western New England never got any closer.
  • Bates' free throws at 12:01 in the first half bumped the Seahawk lead into double digits and the marging stayed above 10 points the rest of the game.
  • Salve Regina scored 83 points in both games with Western New England this season; the Golden Bears had a game-tying end-of-regulation 3-pointer from Daniel Silva at home on Jan. 19, before winning in overtime (89-83).
  • Western New England had only nine field goals in the second half, seven of them came behind the arc where the Golden Bears shot 50 percent (seven of 14) in the final 20 minutes.
  • Western New England freshman Mikey Pettway (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the visitors with 13 points.
  • Hanlon, Hanson, and Chris O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.) were honored before the contest as seniors playing in their final regular-season home game.
  • Hanlon had more rebounds than the top three players on the Golden Bears combined (Nathaniel Martin - four; Pettway - four; Harrison Chipkin - three).
  • The Seahawks have a chance to grab one of the final two playoff spots (seven or eight) with one game remaining.

Quotes
"Our guys really fed off the emotion of senior night and showed what they are capable of tonight. When we defend at a high level, get to the 50-50 balls and demonstrate shot discipline, we can be very effective as a group. Hopefully we can continue to stay focused as we prepare for our next important contest." - Salve Regina head coach Sean Foster
