Five Seahawks named to NABC Honors Court
NEWPORT, R.I. - Jeff Bielefeld (Littleton, Mass.), Joshua Hohlfelder (Noank, Conn.), John King (Cranston, R.I.), Eric MacKinnon (South Easton, Mass.), and Scott St. Lawrence (Litchfield, N.H.) were named to the NABC Honors Court after an outstanding 2013-14 season that had the Seahawks earn a trip to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball semifinals.
In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year.
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Institution.
"I am very proud of the commitment our guys, in particular the juniors and seniors, have made to prioritize their academics in addition to being solid people and successful players," said 12-year head coach Sean Foster. Our captains, Jeff and Josh, have shown tremendous leadership by example in their academic achievement and have also made an effort to assist the younger players with their time-management and study skills. Scott, Eric and John have made great strides to continue our program's tradition of academic success. These five players are well deserving of being honored by the NABC and we are fortunate to have them in our program."
The quintet joins recent grads Ryan Birrell (Scituate, R.I.), Isiah Pringle (Queens, N.Y.), Daniel Royce (Mahwah, N.J.), and William Smiley (Saunderstown, R.I.) as Salve Regina members of the NABC Honors Court.
The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) also announced the second annual 2013-14 Team Academic Excellence Awards, created by the NABC Committee on Academics. These awards, earned by more than 125 colleges and universities, recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2013-14 season. The five Seahawks helped their Salve Regina squad earn the team recognition.
