Seahawks to 'Play 4 the Cure' on Oct. 11

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - The Salve Regina University field hockey team will participate in its annual 'Play 4 the Cure' campaign when the team hosts Western New England University on Wednesday, October 11 at Gaudet Field (6 p.m.).

Seahawk players will be wearing pink socks during the game handing out purple bracelets to their opponents during pre-game announcements. The Salve Regina field hockey team hopes to draw awareness to cancer research and raise funds to find a cure through this special game.

The Seahawks have established a secure online donation site with the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Donations collected throughout the contest will benefit the the National Foundation for Cancer Research.

October is the height of the field hockey playing season in the United States and is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"Annually we look forward to bringing to attention to this worthy cause," said Seahawk head coach Jennifer Foster. "Our hopes are that friends, family members and fans of Salve Regina field hockey will support our efforts through online donations as well as coming to our game."

In 2017, it's estimated that among U.S. women there will be:

  • 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer (This includes new cases of primary breast cancer, but not recurrences of original breast cancers.).
  • 63,410 new cases of in situ breast cancer.
  • 40,610 breast cancer deaths.
