Seahawks double-up Lasers, 6-3

NEWTON, Mass. – Salve Regina University field hockey defeated Lasell College, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Grellier Field in non-conference action. The loss drops the Lasers to 2-4 overall, while the Seahawks rise to 5-2.

Salve Regina opened up the contest with two unassisted goals in the first half from seniors Julia Grover (Cotuit, Mass.) and Marissa Gagnon (Smithfield, R.I.). At 16:56, Lasell freshman Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) broke free from the Seahawks' defense and dominated a breakaway situation to cut the Lasers' deficit 2-1.

After the halftime break, Salve came out with an offensive edge, firing ten shots to goal in the opening ten minutes. In the 45th, senior Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) grabbed a rebounded shot in front of the net, and gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage.

At 58:10, Flannery reentered the game from a break on the bench, and put away goal number two for the Lasers just 17 seconds after her entry. The Green and Blue responded with a trio of goals, Grover's second with an assist from junior Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.). Freshman Jillian Mosca (Whitesboro, N.Y.) added her second goal of the season.

The Lasers were awarded with a penalty corner in the 67th minute, where freshman Julie Franzik (Wallingford, Conn.) lined up for the play. Senior Cristina Wilson (Wilmington, Mass.) controlled possession after the corner, and found senior Danielle Hottin (North Branford, Conn.) who gave Lasell its final goal of the game, 6-3.

The Seahawks owned a 38-10 shooting advantage on the hosts, and allowed five penalty corners compared to the Lasers' nine.

Sophomore Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) recorded 19 saves in the effort, and drops to 2-4 overall, while Seahawks' sophomore net minder Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) had four stops and jumps to 5-2 this year.

The Lasers hit the road to Elms College for their next contest on Thursday, September 24 at 7 p.m., while the Seahawks welcome the University of New England for a home-field conference contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 26.
