McCann earns eighth shutout in Seahawks victory

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina University field hockey team defeats Western New England 1-0.

Lindsey Mazzola (Upton, Mass.) scored a goal at 14:57 on a feed from Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.) for the only score of the game.

Senior goalkeeper Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) stopped all six shots she faced to earn her seventh shutout of 2014 and the second against the Golden Bears this season.

The Seahawks held onto the one goal lead thanks to stifling defense on the back end. The Golden bears could not sustain any time in the Salve Regina zone and resorted to trying to hit players on breakouts. Multiple times the Golden Bears would try to break out and run but a defender was right there to break up the rush and clear the zone.

It wasn't until under a minute to play in the second half that the Golden Bears threatened with a sustained push and created a few quality chances in front of McCann. The Seahawks however were finally able to pounce on a loose ball in a scramble in front of the net after a McCann save and run out the remaining seconds of the game.

With the victory Salve Regina improves to 11-4 overall and 4-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). Western New England falls to 4-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Salve Regina next plays the second of four straight home games on Saturday October 18 versus the University of New England at 5:30 p.m. Western New England will next face Endicott College on October 18 in Beverly at 1 p.m.
