MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina field hockey team improves to 9-3 on the season with a 3-1 victory over Nichols on a rain soaked Gaudet Field.

The game was tied through ten minutes of play in the first half thanks to some spectacular saves by the Nichols defenders. On one play a strong shot from Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) had crept five-hole past the goalie, only to be snatched out at the last second by a Bison defender trailing the play, saving a would-be goal.

The Seahawks also had multiple odd-man rushes they could not convert before Alexandria Rizzo (Hopedale, Mass.) scored on a penalty stroke to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead at 10:25.

The Seahawks clung to the slim lead deep into the second half before Amber Cody (Pawling, N.Y.) scored at 51:47 to give Salve Regina some breathing room.

It would prove a crucial goal because at 61:53 Lindsey Rapazzo (Mashpee, Mass.) scored for Nichols to trim the lead to 2-1.

Nichols made a strong push generating some quality zonetime for their offense and good looks at the net, but the Seahawk defense stood strong when the momentum was swinging slightly Nichols way.

Salve Regina countered with a strong offensive possession of their own and found the back of the net again when Abigail Tepper fed Alexisse Clinger (Nantucket, Mass.) for the final goal of the game.

With the win Salve Regina improves to 9-3 on the season and 3-3 in CCC play. The Bison fall to 2-9 on the season and 0-6 in CCC play.

The Seahawks next play at Wheelock on October 9 at 8 p.m.
