Seahawks blank Wildcats, 6-0, in season-opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I – The Salve Regina University field hockey team squad posted a 6-0 decision against intra-state rival Johnson & Wales in the first game of the JWU Invitational to open the season at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Friday afternoon.

Junior Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) gave Salve Regina the early advantage when she put in a shot just 58 seconds into the contest. That would be the only goal the Seahawks would need as they controlled the action the rest of the way en route to the 6-0 victory. Tepper tallied two goals and added an assist in the win for Salve Regina. Alexisse Clinger (Nantucket, Mass.) had two goals for the Seahawks while junior Julia Grover (Cotuit, Mass.) had one goal and an assist in the victory.

Senior Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) made three saves in the win for Salve Regina while freshman Shannon Yoder (Boyertown, Pa.) had 12 stops in the setback for Johnson & Wales.

All 25 Seahawks saw action against the Wildcats in the season opener for both teams. Salve Regina returns to the Providence campus on Saturday to face Wheaton (Mass.) in non-league action at 4:30 p.m.)
