Seahawks fall to Endicott

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott field hockey team played host to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon. Senior Amanda Glynn (Hampton, N.H.) tallied two goals in the 4-2 decision over the Seahawks. Endicott now stands at 8-9, (5-5 CCC) while Salve Regina falls to 7-9, (5-5 CCC).

The first frame belonged to the Seahawks as they outshot the Gulls 25-11, while forcing 11 offensive corners. A little over four minutes into the contest senior Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) sent the ball across the circle from the top of the 16 and found sophomore Marissa Gagnon (Smithfield, R.I.) for the tip in on the left side to give Salve the 1-0 advantage.

Senior goalkeeper Lizetta Solarik (Carmel, N.Y.) was stealthy between the pipes as she made an impressive 21 saves in the half. At 15:17 the Gulls answered back as senior Stacie Teevens (Westborough, Mass.) slipped a pass to Glynn in front of the net and Glynn found the back of the net sneaking the ball past junior goalkeeper Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) to tie the game back up.

With five minutes remaining in the frame Salve Regina had a great chance to get another tally on the board with two big shots. The first came from sophomore Julia Grover (Cotuit, Mass.) as she ripped a shot at Solarik but she was able to make the deflection. Seconds later sophomore Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) picked up the ball and went towards the left post, but Solarik made the reaching save to stop the play to enter halftime at a 1-1 tie.

The second frame was a better show for the Blue and Green as they ripped nine shots, to the Seahawks 12. In the 47th minute juniors Mackenzie Hurst (Gilford, N.H.) and Emily Sawchuck (Cumberland, Maine) made a great combination play, after Sawchuck sent the ball across cage to Hurst for the tip in on the right post to take the lead.

Salve Regina did not take the goal lightly as they answered back two minutes later. Gagnon sent a through ball to Bucci who then ripped a shot from the top of the circle and found the back of the net off the left post.

Both squads battled for 10 more minutes until the Gulls were awarded a penalty corner. Teevens stepped up to take the insert and directly sent it to Sawchuck at the top of the circle, who blasted the ball into the back of the net to tally the game winning goal.

Less than a minute later Sawchuck dribbled up the field passing two defenders and sent the ball to the left post, where Glynn was standing to smash the ball into the back of the net for an insurance goal in the 4-2 final decision in Endicott's favor.

Solarik earned a career and program high 29 saves, while her counterpart McCann came away with six. Apart of Solarik's defensive unit was senior Emily O'Halloran who put in a tremendous amount of effort in the backfield as she came away with two defensive saves.

Endicott will look ahead to Wednesday October 30 as the Gulls play their last road game of the regular season at CCC opponent, the University of New England at 6:00 p.m. The Seahawks will also look to Wednesday as they head to conference opponent Roger Williams for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
