Gendreau, Tepper, Bucci score goals in Seahawk defeat

Salem, Mass. — Lauren Pazdziorny (Middelton, Mass.) gave a stellar four-goal performance to lead the Salem State University Vikings (1-2) to a 5-3 victory over the Salve Regina University Seahawks (1-3) on Thursday night.

Pazdziony started the scoring a minute into the game with a goal in front of the net to give her team an early lead. Pazdziorny then blasted in a pass from Nicole Bisbee (Templeton, Mass.) at the 11:41 mark to make it 2-0 game. Salve Regina scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2-2 when Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.) rolled a ball past Salem State goalie Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.), and Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) followed on an assist from Julia Grover (Cotuit, Mass.). The Vikings regained the lead at 24:44 of the first when Katie Pietrini (Beverly, Mass.) scored to make it 3-2 at the half.

The Seahawks put pressure on the Vikings' defense early in the second, but were unable to find the back of the net until Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) tied the game for Salve Regina late, when Tepper set her up for the Seahawks third goal. The game remained tight until Pazdziorny took over in the final minutes, scoring twice, the first from Bisbee that regained the lead, and her second, and fourth goal of the game, on an assist from Pietrini that gave Salem State a 5-3 lead with four minutes to go.

Salem State freshman Woodin made three saves in her first collegiate start to pick up the win, while the Seahawks Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) had four saves.

Salem State held a 15-7 advantage in shots, while Salve Regina took five corners compared to the Vikings' two.

The Vikings host Western Connecticut on Saturday at 1:00. The Seahawks take on St. Joseph's of Maine at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
