NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University football team plays its final regular-season home game on Saturday, November 11, when the Seahawks host the Colonels of Curry College (12 p.m. at Toppa Field). The winner of this game gains an advantage to participate in a postseason bowl game. The Seahawks have participated in postseason play for six straight seasons (the longest active streak for any team in New England). Meanwhile, the Colonels have not participated in postseason play since 2009, a 48-42 loss to Maine Maritime in that season's NEFC Championship game.

LAST TIME OUT
Salve Regina University football defeated Becker College, 55-0, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in Leicester. It was the final home game of the season for the Hawks of Becker. The Seahawks of Salve Regina (6-2, 3-1 CCC) were led by senior quarterback Danny McDermott, who completed 12 of 14 passes for 198 yards with three touchdown strikes. Senior running back Jake Gelb ran 18 times for 96 yards and two scores, while sophomore running back Ronnie Martin ran ten times for 57 yards and a score. Senior wide receiver Connor Sullivan caught four passes for 94 yards and a touchdown, while senior tight end Tommy Seaver had three catches for 78 yards and a score. Sophomore wide receiver Brendan Nunes finished with four catches for 19 yards. Sophomore strong safety Charlie Connell led the defense with ten tackles.

  • Military Appreciation on Veterans' Day 2017 includes color guard presented by the Rhode Island ROTC with members from University of Rhode Island, Roger Williams University, and Salve Regina University.
  • Brandon O'Neill (5.5) and John Salute (4) among the top five sack leaders in the CCC.
  • The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting donations of canned goods for its annual food drive.
  • Sigma Theta Tau, honor society for nursing, is joining with the Coast Guard to collect goods to aid hurricane victims.
  • McDermott ranks fourth in the league passing yards per game (200.4).
  • Brendan Nunes and Nick Villanueva share the league lead in touchdown receptions with eight apiece. Philip Lebel and Connor Sullivan both have five touchdown receptions.
  • James Dawson, whose season was cut short with an injury in Oct. 21 game versus Endicott, has the most rushing yards per game (110.0) while Curry's Sean Amaru ranks second (72.6).
  • Both teams have a pair of receivers in the top five receiving yards per game - Curry's Spencer Tyler (62.2) and Nick Villanueva (59.1), Salve Regina's Connor Sullivan (53.9) and Tommy Seaver (49.1).

COLONEL CLIPPINGS

  • Senior quarterback Alex Corvese leads the CCC in scoring. He has passed for 17 touchdowns (ranked 2nd in CCC) and has rushed for 11 (1st in the CCC).
  • Curry's loss last week eliminated the chance at a three-way tie at the top of the conference. If Western New England loses today at home to Nichols, the Golden Bears clinch the first Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC) championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.
  • Brendan Nunes and Nick Villanueva share the league lead in touchdown receptions with eight apiece. Philip Lebel and Connor Sullivan both have five touchdown receptions.
  • Sean Amaru ranks second in rushing yards per game (72.6) behind Salve Regina's James Dawson (110.0).
  • Joe Surace shares the league-lead in sacks (5.5) with Salve Regina's Brandon O'Neill.

INSIDE THE SERIES
Salve Regina leads the all-time series, 16-8, and has won seven in a row over Curry. In the last meeting (Oct. 1, 2016), Sam Pascale gained 225 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns to lead visiting Salve Regina University over Curry College at Walter M.Katz Field in New England Football Conference (NEFC) action. The Seahawks got the scoring started when James Dawson finished off an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a six-yard run to make the score 7-0. Salve Regina added to its lead with 5:59 remaining in the first quarter when Andrew Verre tacked on a 22-yard field goal to increase the lead to 10-0. After a safety, the Seahawks would add two scores to increase their lead to 26-0.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Each team will await an invitation to a postseason bowl game. Last year, the Seahawks hosted the inaugural New England Bowl Championship which has expanded to a two-game series for November 18.
