Bantams put game away in late innings

HARTFORD, Conn. (April 19, 2019) -- The Trinity College baseball team won over the Salve Regina Seahawks on Friday afternoon, 9-1, at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium. The Bantams improve to 21-5 on the year while Salve Regina falls to 14-13 overall.
Salve Regina struck first, scratching across a run in the top of the first on an RBI-single off the bat of Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.), but the Bantams took control the rest of the way. After a scoreless second inning, Trinity scored twice in the third to take a lead that they did not relinquish. Senior CF Geoff Stillman (Scituate, Mass.) came across on a wild pitch for the team's first run before junior RF Matt Koperniak(Adams, Mass.) sent a deep sac fly to left that scored Reinisch.
Bantam junior starter Andrew DeRoche (North Reading, Mass.) turned in a strong effort on the bump today, going 5.1 innings while striking out four and allowing just three hits. DeRoche allowed just the lone run in the first before eventually turning the ball over to senior tri-captain Erik Mohl (Milton, Mass.). Mohl threw two innings of scoreless baseball before first-year Will Simeone (Milton, Mass.) came on for the final 1.2 innings and struck out three with no runs allowed.
Trinity junior tri-captain C Alex Rodriguez (South Windsor, Conn.) just missed making it a three-run game in the fourth, crushing a ball that hit the top of the fence in left-center, instead settling for an RBI-double that brought home senior tri-captain 1B Johnny Stamatis (Ridgefield, Conn.). Koperniak tripled home Reinisch in the fifth to make it a 4-1 game through five. The Bantams scored five more times in their final three at bats to cruise to the 9-1 victory.
Koperniak went 3-for-4 with two triples, two RBIs and a run scored while Stamatis and Rodriguez both finished with two RBIs on the day as well. Stamatis went 3-for-4 and added two runs scored while Reinisch scored three times in addition to a pair of walks. Smith was the lone Seahawk with more than one hit.
