Falcons feast on Seahawk miscues, 5-0

SEAHAWK BASEBALL RESULTS
Fitchburg State 5, Salve Regina 0
Bill Beck Field - Kingston, Rhode Island
Friday, March 1, 2019

KINGSTON, R.I. - Fitchburg State University centerfielder Nicholas Cordreau (Melrose, Mass.) tripled to deep center to lead off the third inning and scored on an opposite field single from second baseman Timothy Horton (Northampton, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons added four unearned runs in the late innings for a 5-0 win over host Salve Regina University at Bill Beck Field on the campus of the University of Rhode Island in non-league baseball action.

Seahawk tough-luck starting pitcher Patrick Maybach (Saunderstown, R.I.) hurled another six innings allowing just three hits while striking out 14 batters. He now has 24 Ks in 12.0 innings pitched in 2019. His counterpart, Richard Sharp (Townsend, Mass.), lived up to his name in a 7.2-inning effort with just five Seahawks reaching base (three hits, one walk, and one hit batsman) while striking out six.

Salve Regina leftfielder Dustin Siqueira (Trumbull, Conn.) accounted for two of the Seahawk hits off Sharp, in the third and eighth innings, but both came with two outs and he got no farther than second base each time. Senior Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) had the other Seahawk hit.

Matthew Pingitore (Rutland, Mass.) scored two of the Falcon runs and drove in another with an infield single. Brendan Ferrell (Plymouth, Mass.) also had an RBI infield single in the eighth.

Seahawk pitchers combined for 22 strikeouts - Maybach with 14, Will Ginsberg (Sharon, Mass.) and Michael Mathews (West Hartford, Conn.) with four apiece. Falcon reliever Shaun Gamelin (West Kingston, R.I.) enjoyed pitching in his backyard with four strikeouts in an inning and a third.

The Seahawks (1-1) travel to Florida next week for an eight-game road trip that starts against Ohio Northern University on Friday, March 8, at Lake Myrtle Park (1:30 p.m.) in the RussMatt Invitational. The Falcons (1-0) will meet the Colonels of Curry College on Sunday in Northboro, Mass., in between snow storms expected to hit the area.
