Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University baseball team earned a sweep of visiting Curry College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader Monday afternoon thanks to timely hitting in game one, and a complete game performance from freshman pitcher Michael Mathews (West Hartford, Conn.).

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks own a 42-20-1 record versus the Colonels all-time and have won two straight in the series.

Three Stars of the Day

  1. Salve Regina sophomore Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) went 4-for-4 in game one with four hits. He drove in two runs, including the go-ahead score with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
  2. Salve Regina freshman Michael Mathews (West Hartford, Conn.) pitched a complete game, going seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out eight to earn the victory in game two.
  3. Curry senior John Cave (Tewksbury, Mass.) went 3-for-4 in game one with three hits, a double, home run, and an RBI.

Key Stat of the Day
The Seahawks went 5-for-11 with two outs in game one, scoring six runs.

Turning Points
In game one the Colonels retook a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth off a John Cave solo homerun, only to surrender four runs back to the Seahawks in the bottom of the frame. After getting the first two batters to ground out, Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) walked Michael Defusco (East Greenwhich, R.I.) to extend the inning. Then Alex Perry (No. Attleboro, Mass.) lifted a flyby to shallow right field that was dropped, allowing Defusco to come home to score and tie the game. After another walk issued by Wensley, Dylan Ketch got his fourth hit of the game to drive in Perry, then Colton Eremian (Boca Raton, Fla.) doubled to score two more runs. Will Ginsberg (Sharon, Mass.) struck out the first batter, allowed a single, then got pinch hitter Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) to hit into a game-ending double play.

In game two the Seahawks led 2-1 in the top of the sixth. John Cave led of the inning with a double, then advanced to third on an errand throw from Mathews. With only one out and the tying run at third Mathews clamped down on the Colonels batters, getting Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.), who had hit a homerun in game one, to line out to second base on a hard hit ball, then struck out Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to end the scoring threat and preserve the lead. Michaels would return to the mound in the top of the seventh, getting two more groundouts and his eighth strikeout for his first career complete game victory.

Quick Hits

  • Zach Dionne (Tolland, Conn.) pitched four innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out four before being relieved by Will Ginsberg who went the final three innings and allowed one run on four hits to pick up his third victory of the year for Salve Regina.
  • Robert Reedy (Cumberland, R.I.) went four and third innings in game one, surrendering three runs on eight hits before giving way to Wensley who took the loss in an inning and a third of work.
  • Kevin Jones (Pembroke, Mass.) gave the visitors three shutout innings to begin game two, then James Mello (Fall River, Mass.) was tagged for two runs on four hits in the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season.
