NCAA-bound Seahawks land in Cape Cod for games starting Thursday

NDIANAPOLIS – Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Baseball Champion, No. 20/23 Salve Regina will begin its 2017 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship in Harwich, Mass. where the Seahawks will compete in the NCAA New England Regional hosted by Mass. Maritime Academy. As the No. 4 seed in the regional, their opening game will be Thursday, May 18 against No. 5 seed Babson with first pitch scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

The entire 56-team field was announced early Monday morning via press release from the NCAA.

Salve Regina has been in the national picture all year long, most recently checking in at No. 20 in the Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Poll and No. 23 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25. It finished the regular season at 34-10 overall (14-2 CCC). The Seahawks gained entry into this year's Championship by winning the CCC's automatic qualifier. Serving as the No. 1 seed in the CCC Championship Tournament, the defending champions defeated No. 4 seed Curry and No. 5 seed Nichols to emerge out of the three-team pod to earn a spot in the CCC Championship Series. In the CCC Championship Series, Salve swept the first two games against No. 2 seed Endicott to clinch the CCC Tournament Championship.

Babson, which carries a 25-13 overall record (12-5 NEWMAC), was also an automatic qualifier in this year's tournament as it earned the bid out of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The Beavers swept MIT in the NEWMAC Championship Series to claim the title.

Six other teams were also selected to participate in the New England Regional. No. 1 seed UMass Boston, No. 6 seed Suffolk, and No. 7 seed Worcester State were all automatic qualifiers out of New England conferences with the Beacons earning the Little East berth, the Rams qualifying out of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), and the Lancers emerging out of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). No. 2 seed Arcadia received an automatic bid out of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth (MAC Commonwealth) and No. 8 seed Penn State-Berks claimed the North Eastern Athletic Conference's (NEAC) automatic spot. No. 3 seed St. John Fisher was the lone at-large selection in the group coming out of the Empire 8.

Harwich is one of eight regional sites. All regionals will use a double-elimination format with the winners of each of the regional tournaments qualifying for the double-elimination championship at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis., Friday-Tuesday/Wednesday, May 26-30/31, 2017.
