NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior lefty Jimmy Fitzgerald (Canton, Mass.) and senior righty Cory Poplawski (Syracuse, N.Y.) both tossed complete-game victories as Salve Regina University baseball swept a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader from No. 22/30 Western New England University (D3Baseball.com/ABCA), 1-0 in the opener and 4-1 in game two.
The games were played on the Seahawks' home field in Newport, R.I., but Salve Regina was the "away" team in both contests. Unplayable field conditions for the Golden Bears moved the twinbill from Springfield, Mass.
Fitzgerald's seven-inning shutout also featured nine strikeouts while allowing just five hits. Poplawski carried a two-hit shutout into his final inning of work before an RBI groundout produced the lone Western New England run of the day.
Junior John Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.) opened the day with an infield single, moved to second on a groundout, stole third base, and scored the only run of the first game on an RBI groundout by Alex Perry (No. Attleboro, Mass.).
