Seahawks fly 76 on Spring Academic All-CCC

ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE HISTORY

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Five hundred seventy-nine Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) student-athletes were honored on Tuesday afternoon as the league announced its Spring Academic All-Conference Team. The spring list includes participants from each of the CCC's member institutions who participated in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's golf, men's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, softball, men's tennis, and women's track and field. Competitors in the men's track and field invitational were also honored.

In order to be recognized as a member of the Academic All-Conference Team an athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) and must also have attained sophomore academic status.

Included among the honorees are the 10 winners of the CCC Scholar-Athlete awards, which are given to a student-athlete who is either graduating or has exhausted his or her athletic eligibility in their respective sport. Endicott and Western New England each had three CCC Scholar-Athletes this semester. The Gulls' recipients were Carter Knox (Hinesburg, Vt.) in men's golf, Grant Garrity (Duxbury, Mass.) in men's lacrosse, and Abigail Keim (Williston, Vt.) in women's track and field. The Golden Bear awardees were Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) in baseball, Tyler Hines (North Haven, Conn.) in men's ice hockey, and Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) in men's tennis. Rebecca Cleary (Milford, N.H.) from Nichols and Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) from Roger Williams were the honorees in women's and men's basketball, respectively. Gordon's Rose Shannon (Ashland, Mass.) took home the award in softball and the University of New England's Nichole Carvalho(South Kingstown, R.I.) won in women's lacrosse.

Coene was also one of 15 CCC Academic All-Conference Team members who also won a major award this year as he was the men's basketball Player of the Year. Endicott's Joe Shehadi (Dorset, Vt.), who won the Defensive Player of the Year award in men's basketball, was also an Academic All-Conference recipient.

Their counterparts on the women's side, Player of the Year Emily Pratt (Gardner, Mass.) from Endicott and Defensive Player of the Year Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) from Curry, were also included on this year's list.

The Gulls had three other major award winners who earned All-Academic honors this year, all in the sport of lacrosse. On the men's side Hayden Souza (West Hartford, Conn.) was the Short-Stick Specialist of the Year, while Jennifer Lacroix (Wrentham, Mass.) and Bella Rino (Northborough, Mass.) were the women's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.

Two other major award winners from Roger Williams joined Coene on this year's list. They were baseball Pitcher of the Year Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) and women's track and field Field Performer of the Year Savannah Fox Tree-McGrath (Billerica, Mass.). Western New England also had three award winners featured in Golfer of the Year Ryan Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.), men's lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year Mitch Weiss(Westfield, Mass.), and men's tennis Rookie of the Year Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France).

The three remaining Academic All-Conference members who brought home major awards were baseball Player of the Year Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) from Salve Regina, men's tennis Player of the Year Blake Norton (Stratford, Conn.) from Nichols, and softball Player of the Year Avery Alberghini (Moretown, Vt.) from UNE.

Many of the major award winners were also named to the All-Conference Teams in their respective sports. Overall there were 127 All-CCC members on this year's list. Of those, 49 earned First Team honors, 42 were Second-Teamers, and 36 were on the Third Team.
